FAQ
Who should I talk to when I arrive?
The Crew and Carpool Captain should be very easy to reach when you arrive. They are able to sign you in, take your form and registered fee, supply you with the T-shirt and let you know what is available for the day.
What should I wear/bring?
Just remember, you should wear clothes you don’t care of getting dirty and sturdy shoes, but please do not wear sandals. We usually offer some snacks and water, but you may wish to bring your own. further, Additionally you can take your phone and camera, just be sure that you will keep close track of them.
Where are the carpool sites? Am i allowed to come directly to the project site?
If at all possible, we would like you to come to the carpool sites rather than going directly to the project sites. However if you are unable to get to carpool site but project site, we will assist you to make it happen.
When should I arrive? When will I return? Can I come late or leave early?
we usually start at 9:00 in the morning, however, we really encourage everybody to arrive 10 to 15 minutes before 9. The earlier you show up, the more option you will have in which project you can choose. We are normally scheduled to finish at 2:00, so this means anywhere from 1:30 to 2:30 once you figure in the projects, their locations and those orange cones that bloom during the summer time.
How can i know what project I am going to do?
The program has expanded to a point where we’ve got multiple mural (paint!), garden (plant!) and youth enrichment (play!) sites every day, so you should get to pick whichever you want whenever you come. As we mentioned before, coming earlier will enable you to have more options to choose.
Who are you going to work with?
At the heart of each project we have is a partnership. Currently we have more than 40 community partners in Detroit, which include some nonprofit organizations, schools, churches and some city agencies.
On a daily basis, we paint, plant and play. After many years of experiences, we found that painting murals, planting community gardens and helping kids in Detroit give you the greatest experience to volunteers and impact to community partners. However, with Summer in the City, you are able to try different projects on different days because we always open our door to new partners and programs.
Where are those projects located?
We only go to areas that we are familiar with. Generally, we have got lots of partners in Midtown and Southwest Detroit communities, and some in Hamtramck or around the east side.
When do you do for every project?
We currently have a number of youth, garden and murals sites going every day. This makes sure that there’ll always be sufficient work for everyone which volunteers could possibly get the most project preference possible.
