Jazzin' Summer

Volunteers gather in front of the Summer in the City mural
on Jefferson Avenue for the 2005 group picture.

Summer in the City is preparing to strike up the band. Even if the program isn't trading in its shovels for saxophones, it will play a big part in Detroit's annual Jazzin' on Jefferson festival this summer.

Summer in the City will make a duet alongside Jefferson East Business Association to make sure the neighborhood is tuned up and ready to play on June 22. Volunteers will plant flowers, spread wood chips and paint buildings along the avenue in anticipation of the event.

And everyone's invited. Elementary school students from the neighborhood will take a field trip to join volunteers for fun activities including sidewalk chalk and tye dying.

That's all before lunch.

"As anyone who knows Summer in the City knows, our Fridays barbecues are not to be missed," said Michael Goldberg, Summer in the City associate director. "We're jazzing up our first one for '07 to make sure we get the summer started in style. One of the restaurants from the festival will be serving everyone lunch, but we're keeping the menu a secret for now."

As always, volunteers are welcome to improvise, since they can participate without signing up in advance.
