Painting Seascapes

Seascapes are considered the most difficult painting subject for a variety of reasons. Firstly, the sea itself is constantly changing because it is always moving. Capturing the movement of the sea can be very difficult. Even far off of the shore, the water moves because of wind or movement underwater. Breaking waves will be moving different ways. A wave breaking on rocks will move in a completely different way to the waves rolling on to the beach.

Color presents another challenge to the seascape artist. Even a clear blue sea has different shades of blue. The foam is going to be white or gray and areas with sandbanks are going to be darker. Water is reflective, so it will reflect other elements, making the water greener or bluer. Water at sunset can appear orange or pink, reflecting the sun, sky and clouds tinged those colors by the setting sun.
You must observe the area you’d like to paint, before beginning a seascape. Look at the area’s elements, the action of the water on the elements, and the patterns that the water creates.

At this stage, an idea of the composition will help. An idea will help you, whether a detailed sketch or a basic outline.

When creating your composition sketch, the most important decision will be where to lay out the horizon. The horizon should appear higher on the page if your focus is the sea. Place the horizon lower down if you have an interesting sky. Never place the horizon on the center.

You can paint successful seascapes using basically any medium. The medium you use will be your personal choice. There are specific techniques within each medium that will help the beginner artist to depict water and waves. The wave can be changed using different brush angles. The crest of the wave needs the brush stroke to come over the top, while the inside of the wave will need a stroke that is curved under. Make sure you follow the movement of the water.

Boats and people can be incorporated into the seascape. Determining the focal point of your painting will help you work on your composition and add to the harmony of your work.

Completing a seascape will give you a feeling of satisfaction. There is no right or wrong way to paint a seascape.
